I’m excited to announce a brand-new feature in the Toocheke and its companion plugin that helps your readers pick up exactly where they left off, without ever having to create an account: Continue Reading.

If you’ve ever used Webtoon or Tapas, you’ve probably seen that “Continue Reading” button that jumps you straight back to the next episode you haven’t read yet. It’s one of those small things that makes a big difference β€” readers don’t have to scroll through your archive hunting for last post they read. Now your own webcomic site can do the same thing.

πŸ’₯ What’s New in Toocheke

The latest version introduces Continue Reading, which lets you:

  • Add a Continue Reading button anywhere on your site with a simple shortcode β€” a sidebar, a widget, wherever makes sense for your layout
  • Show the button right in your navigation bar, if you’re using the Toocheke or Toocheke Premium theme
  • Give readers a read/unread indicator in their comic lists, so they can see at a glance which comics they’ve already caught up on
  • All of it works without requiring readers to log in or create an account

Best of all, it’s a single switch to turn on. Once it’s enabled, your readers don’t have to do anything differently β€” the button and the indicators just start working the next time they read a comic.

⚑ How to Turn It On

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Toocheke β†’ Options β†’ Navigation β†’ Continue Reading.
  2. Check the box for “Allow readers to track their reading progress?”
  3. Save your changes.

That’s it β€” Continue Reading is now active site-wide.

πŸ”˜ Adding the Continue Reading Button

The easiest way to add the button anywhere on your site is with a shortcode:

[toocheke-continue-reading]

Drop that into a sidebar widget, a page, or anywhere else you use shortcodes, and it’ll show a “Continue Reading” button once a reader has actually started a series.

If you want the button to always point to one specific series β€” handy if you’re placing it on that series’ own page β€” you can pass the series ID:

[toocheke-continue-reading sid="123"]

🧭 Using the Toocheke or Toocheke Premium Theme? Skip the Shortcode.

If your site runs on Toocheke or Toocheke Premium, there’s an even easier way to add the button β€” right in your main navigation bar, no shortcode needed:

  1. Go to Appearance β†’ Customize β†’ Navigation Bar.
  2. Check “Display Continue Reading button in navigation bar?”
  3. Click Publish.

The button will now show up alongside your menu automatically.

πŸ‘€ Read/Unread Indicators

When viewing a list of comics in Thumbnail View, Continue Reading doesn’t just remember where readers left offβ€”it also visually marks comics they’ve already read. Previously read comics are slightly faded, so readers can instantly see what’s new before continuing from where they left off.

πŸ”’ How It Works (and Why There’s No Login Required)

One of the best aspects of Continue Reading is that your readers don’t need to create an account or sign in.

Instead, Continue Reading quietly remembers which comics and manga chapters a reader has opened by storing that information locally in their own browser. Nothing is sent to your server, nothing is shared with third parties, and no reading history is tracked outside of the reader’s device.

Because the information stays in the browser, it’s tied to that specific device and browser. If a reader switches to a different device, uses another browser, or clears their browsing data, their reading progress won’t carry over.

For most readers, that’s a worthwhile trade-off. They get the convenience of picking up exactly where they left offβ€”without creating an account, remembering another password, or sharing any personal information.

πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ Why I Added This Feature

So many of you publish long-running series β€” some with hundreds of pages β€” which makes it harder for a reader to remember where they left off. The Continue Reading feature solves that problem while helping your readers stay engaged with your comics.

πŸ’¬ Feedback Welcome

If you end up using the Continue Reading feature, I’d love to hear how it works for your comic site. Your feedback always helps shape what comes next for Toocheke.

Thanks again for supporting Toocheke and being part of the community! πŸ–€

Happy Tooning!
